Chapter 2 - The Impossible Truth

"Look!" Sophia laughed, her voice ringing with pure, unadulterated joy as she reached her small arms out toward Clara. "I moved, Clara! I moved!"

But the joyful echo of the little girl’s voice was instantly swallowed by a heavy, suffocating tension that flooded the sunroom.

Standing perfectly still in the arched doorway was Enzo Moretti.

The tall, devastatingly handsome man in his late thirties was the most feared mafia boss in the state. He wore a flawlessly tailored navy blue three-piece suit with a sharp purple tie, his dark hair and rugged stubble framing a face that usually radiated cold, lethal authority.

But right now, Enzo looked completely paralyzed.

He froze completely, his large hand resting near his mouth in absolute, stunned disbelief. His dark, piercing eyes were wide, tracking the subtle, miraculous movement of his daughter's heavy medical leg braces.

Two years ago, the most expensive neurologists in the country had stood in this exact room and told Enzo that the tragic accident had severed Sophia's nerves. They told the ruthless kingpin that all his billions could never buy his daughter's ability to walk again.

Enzo took a slow, trembling step onto the marble floor. He looked like a man who had just seen a ghost.
