Chapter 3 - The Shocking Recognition

The effect was instantaneous.

Leo’s frantic sobbing stopped dead. The little boy lowered his hands from his face. He looked up at the young maid, his brown eyes wide and filled with heavy tears. The realistic micro-expressions on his face shifted from absolute terror and sadness to pure, unadulterated wonder. His slow eye movement tracked Clara’s face as if he was staring at an angel.

He took a shaky breath, his voice barely a whisper in the massive ballroom.

"That's the song my mother used to sing to me," Leo said softly, completely amazed.

The entire gala seemed to stop breathing.

Victor’s authoritative, intimidating expression completely vanished. The glass of whiskey he had just picked back up slipped from his fingers, shattering loudly against the marble floor. The amber liquid splashed across his polished leather shoes, but he didn't even blink.

He turned his head sharply to look at the blonde maid. His handsome face was completely tense with absolute shock, his chest rising and falling heavily beneath his open black suit jacket.

For six years, Victor had played a grainy, damaged audio recording of that exact lullaby for Leo every single night to help him sleep. It was the only thing he had left of the mystery woman who had saved his life when he was blinded in a crash—the woman who had carried his child before supposedly dying in childbirth.

Nobody knew that song. Nobody but him and the ghost of the woman he loved.

Victor took a slow, heavy step toward Clara. His dark eyes locked onto hers with terrifying intensity.

"Where did you learn that song?" Victor demanded, his voice thick with urgency and suppressed emotion.
