Chapter 6 - The Diamond Setup

Elise wasn't going to wait around for Victor to find Clara. She needed the maid completely discredited and locked behind bars tonight, where Victor could never reach her.
Elise marched back into the main ballroom, making a dramatic show of clutching her bare neck.
"My necklace!" Elise screamed hysterically, causing the string quartet to screech to a halt. "My three-million-dollar diamond necklace! It’s gone!"
The wealthy guests gasped in horror. Victor’s security team immediately flooded the room, locking down the exits.
"Someone stole it!" Elise cried, pointing a trembling finger toward the servants' corridor. "It was that blonde maid! The one who was bothering Leo! I saw her staring at my diamonds all night!"
Before Victor could even process what was happening, his overly aggressive security captain, desperate to impress Elise, kicked open the locker room door and dragged a terrified Clara out into the main hallway.
They pushed Clara to the marble floor in front of hundreds of silent, judging guests.
"I didn't take anything!" Clara begged, her black and white uniform torn at the shoulder, tears streaming down her bruised face. "Please, I swear!"
"Search her bag!" Elise commanded ruthlessly.
A security guard grabbed Clara’s faded, cheap purse and dumped its contents onto the pristine marble floor. Out tumbled a few bus tokens, a cheap flip phone, and a brilliant, blindingly bright diamond necklace.
The crowd erupted in disgusted whispers.
"You filthy, ungrateful thief!" Elise shrieked, stepping forward to slap Clara hard across the face. "Call the police right now! I want her locked in a federal penitentiary for the rest of her pathetic life!"

Clara sobbed, curling into a ball on the floor. She had lost everything. Her baby, her memory, and now her freedom.
