Chapter 3 - The Mean Lady

The cinematic tension in the grand marble corridor spiked to a paralyzing, breathless peak.

Dante didn't stand up. He kept his dark eyes locked on Sophia’s pale, frightened face.

“Sophia,” Dante whispered, his voice dropping into a low, serious tone that demanded the absolute truth. “Why are you pointing at that door?”

Sophia stepped closer to Dante, instinctively seeking his protection. She clutched her purple crayon tightly against her chest.

“The mean lady with the yellow hair is in there,” Sophia whispered nervously. “And she brought the man with the snake on his neck. They locked the door so nobody could hear them.”

All the warmth completely drained from Dante’s body. The terrifying, calculating mafia executioner violently awakened.

The "mean lady with the yellow hair" was Victoria, Dante’s thirty-something, incredibly arrogant fiancée. And the "man with the snake on his neck" was Marcus, Dante’s most trusted underboss. They had absolutely no business being locked inside a private room together.

Dante stood up to his full, towering height. He stepped past the little girl and grasped the heavy brass handle of the sitting-room door.

It was locked from the inside.

Dante didn't knock. He raised his polished shoe and violently kicked the heavy mahogany door directly near the deadbolt. The wood splintered with a deafening crack, and the door flew open, crashing against the interior wall.

Dante stormed into the luxurious sitting room, his hand drifting instinctively toward the concealed weapon under his black suit jacket.

Victoria was sitting elegantly on a velvet sofa, holding a teacup, wearing a flawless white designer dress.
