Chapter 2 - The Hidden Compartment

Vincent didn't make a sound. The terrifying, ruthless exterior of the mafia boss completely took over. He gently touched Josie’s shoulder, offering her a small, reassuring smile that didn't quite reach his intense dark eyes.

"You are an excellent spy, Josie," Vincent whispered softly. "Now, I need you to go to your playroom and lock the door. Daddy is going to handle this."

Josie nodded bravely and scurried silently down the opposite corridor.

Once his daughter was entirely out of sight, Vincent stood up. He walked slowly, deliberately toward the luxurious gold-trimmed sofa where Gianna had just been standing. He didn't call his security team. He needed to know exactly what kind of snake he had invited into his home.

He knelt on the black and white marble floor and ran his hands underneath the heavy velvet cushions of the sofa.

He felt a small, unnatural tear in the fabric lining underneath the frame.

Vincent reached his heavily tattooed hand inside the hidden cavity. His fingers brushed against a thick stack of paper. He pulled it out into the dim light of the crystal chandeliers.

It was a bundle of over fifty thin white envelopes, tightly bound together with a rubber band. They were all completely sealed.

Vincent slipped the top envelope out of the stack. There was no return address, but there was a name scrawled across the front in shaky, desperate cursive ink.

Vincent stopped breathing. The massive crystal chandeliers above him seemed to violently sway.

He knew that handwriting. He had spent hours staring at it on old birthday cards and love letters. It belonged to his wife, Elena.
