Chapter 9 - The Ghost Returns

Vincent didn't wait for the guards to open the front doors. He sprinted through the grand hallway, throwing the heavy mahogany doors wide open.
The black armored SUV was parked in the circular driveway. The heavy steel door swung open.
Marcus stepped out first. Then, he gently reached his hand inside to help someone down.
Elena stepped onto the gravel.
She was incredibly frail. She wore an oversized grey hospital sweatshirt. Her beautiful brown hair was slightly messy, and she looked exhausted from two years of overmedication and isolation. But as she looked up at the grand mansion, her eyes were bright, lucid, and filled with tears of absolute disbelief.
Vincent froze on the stone steps. The terrifying, ruthless mafia boss completely broke down.
He dropped to his knees on the hard gravel, covering his face with his hands as a ragged, agonizing sob tore from his chest. He had mourned her. He had buried an empty casket. And she was standing right in front of him.
"Vincent?" Elena whispered, her voice incredibly weak, trembling with emotion.
Vincent scrambled to his feet and rushed forward. He didn't care who was watching. He wrapped his strong arms around her fragile body, pulling her into a fierce, desperate, and unbreakable embrace.
"I'm so sorry," Vincent wept into her hair, kissing her head over and over again. "I didn't know, Elena. I swear to God I didn't know."
