Chapter 5 - The Glass of Wine

Vincent walked into the opulent living room. The fireplace was roaring, casting a warm, deceptive glow across the velvet furniture.
Gianna was sitting on the sofa, elegantly sipping a glass of expensive red wine. She had changed into a silk robe, looking completely relaxed, entirely unaware that the man she was trying to manipulate had just discovered her darkest, most horrific secret.
"There you are, darling," Gianna smiled smoothly, patting the empty space beside her. "You look exhausted. Did you check on Josie?"
"She's sleeping," Vincent lied effortlessly. He poured himself a glass of bourbon and sat down opposite her, his dark eyes locked entirely on her flawless face.
It took every single ounce of willpower Vincent possessed not to reach across the glass coffee table and strangle the life out of her. He looked at her manicured hands and thought about how those same hands had drugged his wife and locked her in a concrete room for two agonizing years.
"You've been so good to us, Gianna," Vincent said, his voice dripping with a subtle, lethal irony that she completely missed. "Taking care of Josie. Stepping in after... after the accident."
Gianna forced a look of deep, theatrical sorrow, gently placing her hand over her heart.
"She was my best friend, Vincent," Gianna sighed, a fake tear glistening in her eye. "I miss Elena every single day. But I know she would be so happy that we found love in the darkness. I'm just trying to honor her memory."
Vincent took a slow sip of his bourbon. His cinematic restraint was terrifying.
"I'm sure you are," Vincent whispered.
