Chapter 1 - The Mark of the Past
The upscale restaurant was a blinding display of absolute wealth and power. Warm, golden lighting spilled from massive crystal chandeliers, illuminating the elite guests dining at polished mahogany tables.
But at the center table, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
Sarah, a twenty-eight-year-old waitress with her brunette hair pulled into a neat updo, approached the table. She wore a crisp black and white uniform, her hands trembling slightly as she balanced a heavy silver tray. She was exhausted, overworked, and terrified of making a mistake in front of the VIP guests.
Sitting at the table was Julian, a powerfully built man in his thirties. He wore a tailored dark suit with an open black shirt, radiating a cold, deeply intimidating aura. He was the most feared syndicate boss in the city. Sitting next to him was his five-year-old daughter, Bella, looking like an absolute princess in a delicate pink lace dress, her long wavy hair cascading down her shoulders.
Sarah carefully leaned over to serve Bella’s plate. As she extended her arm, the stiff cuff of her uniform sleeve shifted backward.
For a fraction of a second, the skin on her forearm was exposed.
Bella stopped eating immediately. The little girl’s bright eyes locked onto Sarah’s arm. With absolute, innocent curiosity, Bella reached out and pointed her small finger directly at the jagged, twisted flesh on Sarah’s forearm.
"That mark on your arm..." Bella said softly.
An extreme, cinematic close-up captured Sarah’s face. She completely froze. Her eyes widened in a sudden, quiet panic, her heart hammering violently against her ribs. She quickly tried to pull her sleeve down, terrified of what the wealthy guests would say.
But Bella looked up at Sarah with pure innocence. "My father has one, too."
