Chapter 5 - The Unveiling

Julian stopped just two feet in front of Sarah.
Sarah squeezed her eyes shut, her entire body shaking like a leaf. She braced herself, expecting the powerful man to strike her or demand she be thrown out into the freezing street.
Instead, Julian did something that made the entire restaurant stop breathing.
He didn't touch her. He slowly raised his own left arm. With his right hand, he unbuttoned the cuff of his expensive black dress shirt. He carefully rolled the dark fabric up to his elbow.
Sarah cautiously opened her tear-filled eyes.
She looked at his muscular forearm. Branded deeply into his skin, completely identical to the twisted, jagged crest on her own arm, was the exact same burn scar.
"My father has one, too," little Bella’s innocent voice echoed in the silence of the room.
Sarah gasped, a choked, agonizing sob tearing from her throat. She looked from the scar up to Julian’s intense, dark eyes. Beneath the sharp jawline, the stubble, and the mafia exterior, she finally saw the terrified teenage boy who had held her hand in the pitch-black basement fifteen years ago.
Julian’s chest heaved. He looked at the scar on Sarah’s arm, the cinematic realization crashing over him with the force of a freight train.
"It was you," Julian whispered, his voice cracking with a profound, overwhelming emotion. "It was always you."
Monica let out a blood-curdling shriek from the side of the table.
