Chapter 6 - The Whisper in the Dark

Monica frantically grabbed Julian’s arm, her designer red dress swishing as she desperately tried to pull him away from the waitress.

"Julian, look at her!" Monica shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at Sarah’s worn uniform. "She's a pathetic, manipulative rat! I am the one who saved you! I am the one who took the burn for you!"

Julian didn't even blink. He violently shrugged Monica’s hand off his suit jacket, disgusted by her touch.

"If you are the girl from the basement, Monica," Julian said, his voice a low, lethal rumble that radiated pure danger. "Then answer one simple question."

Monica swallowed hard, sweating profusely under the crystal chandeliers. "Anything, darling! I remember everything!"

Julian turned his dark, intense eyes back to Sarah, but he spoke loud enough for the entire room to hear.

"When the kidnappers turned off the lights," Julian asked, his voice thick with the trauma of his past. "And I was crying because I thought we were going to die... what did you whisper to me in the dark?"

Monica froze. Her eyes darted wildly around the room. She hadn't been in the basement. She had only stolen the police reports and the silver necklace. She had absolutely no idea what they had talked about in the darkness.

"I... I told you to be brave!" Monica stammered, guessing frantically. "I told you that your father would pay the ransom! I told you we would be rich!"

Julian’s expression turned to absolute, freezing ice.

He slowly looked at Sarah.
