Chapter 7 - The Silver Coin

"I didn't tell you to be brave," Sarah whispered, her soft voice carrying clearly through the dead silent restaurant. "You were already brave."
Julian held his breath, waiting for the words that had haunted his dreams for a decade and a half.
"I told you a story about a yellow bird," Sarah cried softly, reciting the exact memory. "I told you that if we just closed our eyes, we could fly right through the concrete ceiling. And then... you gave me something to hold onto."
Monica gasped, her hands flying to her mouth in absolute terror.
Sarah slowly reached her trembling hand into the collar of her black and white waitress uniform. She pulled out a delicate, worn string. Hanging from the end of it was a small, half-melted silver coin.
Julian stared at the coin. It was the exact silver piece he had pressed into the bleeding girl's hand in the dark, promising he would find her and protect her forever.
Monica had stolen the necklace from the police report, but she never knew about the silver coin hidden in Sarah's pocket.
"I kept it," Sarah whispered, holding the coin out to him. "Just like you asked."
The cinematic, emotional weight of the truth completely shattered the room.
Julian realized that he had spent the last three years engaged to a monster. A woman who had stolen the identity, the wealth, and the life of the very girl who had sacrificed her own body to save him. And worse, Monica had purposefully kept Sarah trapped as a humiliated servant in his own restaurant.
Julian slowly turned his head to look at Monica.
