Chapter 2 - The Perfect Lie

Meredith immediately forced a look of absolute, heartbroken shock onto her face.

She pressed a manicured hand to her chest, her realistic micro-expressions shifting into pure, theatrical victimhood. She looked at Daniel with wide, pleading eyes.

"Daniel, no! Oh my god, of course not!" Meredith gasped, taking a tentative step toward him. "I would never, ever say something so monstrous! She’s just a little girl! She’s confused!"

Daniel stood perfectly still, his jaw locked tight. He looked at Lily, who was still hugging her stuffed rabbit, sobbing quietly on the sofa.

"Then why would she say that, Meredith?" Daniel asked, his voice completely devoid of warmth.

"She misses her mother, Daniel," Meredith replied softly, dropping her voice into a gentle, compassionate tone. "We were looking at old photo albums earlier. She asked me why her mommy went to heaven. I tried to explain that sometimes complications happen during childbirth. She must have completely misunderstood me. You know how children's imaginations work when they are grieving."

Daniel hesitated. The cinematic tension in the bright room was absolute.

Four years ago, Daniel’s first wife, Sarah, had passed away from severe complications just hours after delivering Lily. Daniel had been completely destroyed by the loss, raising Lily entirely on his own until he met Meredith a year ago. Meredith had seamlessly inserted herself into their lives, portraying herself as the perfect, supportive partner who wanted nothing more than to be a mother to the motherless child.

Daniel took a slow, deep breath, running a tattooed hand through his dark hair. He walked over to the sofa and gently lifted his weeping daughter into his strong arms.

"It's okay, baby girl," Daniel whispered, kissing Lily’s forehead. "Nobody blames you. Your mommy loved you more than anything in the world."
