Chapter 7 - The Cornered Rat

Meredith signed her name flawlessly on the bottom line of the top document.

"There you go," Meredith beamed, sliding the folder back. "Anything for our future."

Daniel didn't touch the folder. He just stared at her, his dark eyes turning blacker than midnight.

"You didn't read it," Daniel stated coldly.

Meredith laughed softly. "I don't need to read it, Daniel. I trust you."

"That was your first mistake," Daniel whispered. "Read the top line."

Meredith frowned. She pulled the folder back and looked closely at the bold, black text printed across the top of the legal document.

The color violently drained from her flawless face. Her heart flatlined.

It wasn't a corporate merger document. It was a full, legally binding confession of grand larceny, wire fraud, and child endangerment. And she had just signed it with her own gold pen.

"What... what is this?" Meredith gasped, her hands beginning to shake violently.

"That is a confession," Daniel explained, leaning back in his chair. "Attached to it is a printed transcript of the three hundred thousand dollars you embezzled into your offshore shell companies in the Cayman Islands."

Meredith stumbled backward, her chair scraping loudly against the hardwood floor. Her elegant mask completely shattered, leaving a panicked, feral coward in its place.

"Daniel, this is a misunderstanding!" Meredith shrieked, hyperventilating. "I was moving the money for our taxes! The accountant told me to do it!"

"Did the accountant also tell you to tell my four-year-old daughter that she murdered her own mother?" Daniel roared, the sheer, explosive volume of his voice making the crystal chandelier rattle.
