Chapter 4 - The True Monster

Daniel sat completely paralyzed in the dark office, watching the footage play out.

On the screen, little Lily looked up, her innocent eyes wide with fear. "I'm sorry, Meredith. I was just looking for my rabbit."

"I don't care," Meredith spat, grabbing the white stuffed rabbit from the bed and throwing it violently onto the floor. "I am sick of looking at you. You walk around this house like you own it, constantly whining for your father. You think he actually loves you?"

Daniel’s hands clenched into fists so tight his knuckles turned white.

"My daddy loves me!" Lily cried on the video, picking up her rabbit.

Meredith kneeled down, getting right into the terrified four-year-old's face. The sheer, calculating malice in her eyes was cinematic and terrifying.

"Your daddy pities you," Meredith whispered maliciously. "You are a burden, Lily. You ruined his life. Do you know why your mommy isn't here? Because of you. She died because you were born. You killed her. If you weren't here, she would still be alive, and your father would actually be happy."

On the screen, Lily completely broke down into hysterical, agonizing sobs, running out of the room toward the living room where Daniel would eventually find her.

Meredith stood up, adjusting her elegant blue dress, a smug, wicked smile on her face.

The video ended.

The silence in the home office was absolutely suffocating. Daniel stared at the black screen. The woman sleeping in his bed, the woman he had trusted with his daughter's heart, had been systematically, psychologically torturing a four-year-old child to break her spirit.
