Chapter 3 - The Hidden Camera

That evening, the grand house was completely silent. Meredith had gone to sleep in the master suite, claiming she had a severe migraine from the stress of the day.
Daniel sat alone in the dark nursery, watching little Lily sleep peacefully in her bed. She was still clutching the white stuffed rabbit.
Daniel couldn't shake the heavy, sickening feeling in his gut. Lily wasn't a liar. She was an incredibly smart, observant four-year-old. The exact phrasing she used—“Mommy died because I was born”—was too cruel, too specific to simply be a child's innocent misunderstanding of a medical explanation.
He stood up from the rocking chair and walked over to the bookshelf.
Hidden behind a stack of children's books was a small, discreet nanny cam. Daniel had installed it two years ago when he was interviewing babysitters. He had completely forgotten it was even plugged in, and he had never told Meredith it existed.
He pulled the small memory card out of the camera, his heart hammering against his ribs. He walked down the hall to his private home office, locked the heavy mahogany doors, and slid the memory card into his laptop.
He pulled up the timestamp from earlier that afternoon, right before he had walked into the living room.
The high-definition video loaded on the screen.
Daniel watched as Meredith walked into the nursery. Lily was sitting on the floor, playing quietly with her blocks. Meredith didn't look like an elegant, loving stepmother. Her face was twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated disgust.
"Get your toys out of the hallway, you little brat," Meredith’s recorded voice hissed through the laptop speakers.
