Robert testified against Margaret and Eric.
The courtroom expected a frail victim.
He refused the simpler role.
“I signed pages.”
“Did you understand them?”
“Not fully.”
“Did anyone force you?”
“No.”
“Why did you sign?”
“Because questions caused arguments.”
The prosecutor asked:
“Did your silence harm Paige?”
“Yes.”
Robert looked toward her.
“I thought doing nothing kept peace.”
“What did it keep?”
“The arrangement.”
That word mattered.
The family did not have peace.
It had an arrangement where Paige absorbed consequences.
Robert accepted probation, financial monitoring, and independent care.
He moved into assisted living.
Paige paid no hidden bill.
A public veterans’ benefit and sale proceeds covered most costs.
She helped complete the application.
