Robert’s health declined.
Paige visited weekly at first.
Then twice a month.
No automatic schedule.
No guilt calls.
They learned to speak without Margaret translating.
Robert apologized repeatedly.
Paige eventually asked him to stop using apologies as the entire relationship.
“Tell me something else.”
He began telling stories.
Factory years.
Eleanor’s childhood.
The day Paige was born.
Not every conversation became repair.
Some became ordinary.
Before he died, Robert said:
“I thought being weak meant I wasn’t responsible.”
Paige held his hand.
“What do you think now?”
“It means I needed help. Not that other people had to pay for my choices.”
