Chapter 2 - The Forbidden Intruder

Suddenly, the heavy, pin-drop silence of the grand hallway was broken by the rapid, pitter-patter of tiny footsteps.

A tiny three-year-old girl with fair skin, soft brunette curls, and bright brown eyes darted straight across Adrien’s path. She was wearing a little pink dress. Her appearance was comically chaotic: one white sock was pulled up high, while the other had completely fallen down around her small ankle, dragging slightly on the marble.

Adrien stopped dead in his tracks.

The heavy, intimidating mafia boss blinked, his gray eyes widening in profound disbelief. Grown men trembled and begged for mercy when he simply glanced their way. Yet here, in the dead center of his private, high-security Chicago stronghold, a toddler had just casually sprinted across his path.

The little girl didn't run away. She turned around on the spot, planted her feet, and smiled directly up at him with unbothered, radiant innocence.
