Chapter 9 - The Father's Oath

Adrien turned slowly away from the window. The terrifying, cold mafia boss completely vanished, replaced by a man who had just been handed a second chance at life.
He walked over to where Clara was still sitting in the wooden chair, wiping her tears with trembling hands.
Adrien dropped slowly to one knee, bringing himself down to eye level with the frightened mother. He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently catching her chin and lifting her face so she had to look into his eyes.
"You should have told me the day she was born, Clara," Adrien said softly, his voice thick with a raw, profound remorse. "I would have built an army of steel around you both. You never had to hide from me."
Clara let out a wet, genuine laugh, a tear slipping down her cheek. "I was terrified, Adrien. The underworld is a monster."
"I am the monster," Adrien replied, his gaze unwavering. "And from this moment on, no one on God's earth will ever touch a single hair on her head. Or yours."
He stood up, offering Clara his hand. "Come. Let's go find our daughter."
