Chapter 2 - The Impossible Whisper

The cinematic tension in the grand corridor spiked to a paralyzing level.
Dante didn't yell. He didn't signal his armed guards. He slowly approached the tiny girl, his towering, muscular figure casting a massive shadow over her.
Sophia didn't cower. She looked innocently up at the terrifying mafia boss, her enormous sparkling blue eyes completely devoid of fear.
Dante bent down slightly, studying her curious, angelic face.
"Why do you keep walking like me?" Dante asked, his deep voice stern but remarkably quiet.
Sophia tilted her little head, her golden-brown curls bouncing. She smiled sweetly, looking directly into his piercing gray eyes, and delivered an answer that instantly shattered his cold exterior.
"Because you look lonely," Sophia answered softly.
Dante froze completely. The ruthless, untouchable executioner vanished. His cold expression slowly softened as he glanced toward the large, locked mahogany door at the end of the corridor—the sitting room that had once belonged to his deceased wife. His gray eyes became unexpectedly moist.
Sophia took a tiny step forward in her pink shoes and gently lifted both of her small arms toward him, asking for a hug.
For the first time in eighteen agonizing months, Dante Falcone gave a small, genuine smile. Rosa covered her mouth in disbelief. Dante slowly knelt on the polished marble, preparing to embrace the sweet child.
But as Sophia wrapped her tiny arms around his neck, she gently touched his cheek and leaned closer to his ear.
