Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Betrayal

Dante’s heavily tattooed hands trembled violently as he gently cupped Carmela’s pale, sunken face. Tears of profound relief and catastrophic rage streamed down his cheeks.
"Who did this to you?" Dante choked out, his chest heaving as he frantically unbuckled the soft medical restraints binding her delicate wrists. "The Russians? The Cartel?"
"No," Carmela wept, her weak fingers clutching his black dress shirt. "It was Marco."
The name hit Dante like a physical bullet to the skull.
Marco was his younger brother. His Underboss. The man who had stood beside Dante at Carmela's empty casket, crying fake tears and vowing bloody vengeance on their rivals.
"He pulled me from the car before he detonated it," Carmela gasped, her voice hoarse. "He paid Dr. Evans to keep me sedated in here. Marco wanted you to be so broken by grief that you would step down and hand him the syndicate. He came in here every week... telling me he was going to kill you next."
The cinematic realism of the absolute, crushing betrayal paralyzed Dante. His own flesh and blood had tortured his wife and manipulated his grief to steal his empire.
If Sophia hadn't discovered the old laundry chute that connected to this hidden room and spoken to Carmela through the vent, Carmela would have died in this soundproof prison.
Suddenly, the heavy steel door creaked.

Dante spun around, expecting Marco. But it was Rosa, standing in the doorway holding little Sophia, completely horrified by the sight of the kidnapped woman.
👉 Rosa tried to apologize for intruding, entirely unaware that the traitor was watching them on the security cameras.
