Chapter 1 - The Panic at the Sink

The luxurious, open-concept kitchen and dining room was a picture-perfect display of a wealthy American Christmas. Warm holiday lighting reflected off the massive marble island, the gold double sink, and the elegantly decorated Christmas trees standing in the corners. Family members mingled quietly near the expensive dining table, sipping champagne.

But near the marble sink, the festive atmosphere was violently shattering.

Mauricio, a handsome man in his thirties wearing a sharp dark gray suit, a crisp white shirt, and a black tie, was crouching down. He was gently comforting his six-year-old daughter, Renata. Renata was completely bald from her recent, grueling chemotherapy treatments. She wore a simple white sleeveless dress, her tiny face twisted in a tearful, heartbroken expression.

In his right hand, Mauricio held a thick, heavy legal envelope sealed with red wax. It had just been delivered by a private courier.

"I am opening the attorney's letter," Mauricio stated firmly, his voice cutting cleanly through the ambient noise of the holiday party.

In the blurred background, the tension spiked instantly.

Carmen, Mauricio’s mother, stepped quickly forward from the dining area. She was an elegant woman in her sixties, wearing a luxurious dark burgundy dress. But right now, her flawless, high-society facade was completely destroyed. Her face was pale with sudden, unadulterated panic. She frantically raised her hand, her diamond rings catching the light.

"Mauricio, please don't open it!" Carmen cried out, her voice cracking with sheer desperation as she reached for the envelope.

Mauricio stopped. He didn't tear the seal. He slowly looked back at his mother, his dark eyes narrowing with deep, cinematic suspicion.

Why was his mother terrified of a letter from his late wife’s attorney?

Before Carmen could take another step, little Renata leaned in close to Mauricio.

"Daddy..." Renata whispered nervously, heavy tears shining on her pale cheeks. "Grandma already read that letter."

A tight close-up captured Mauricio’s face as he completely froze. He slowly turned his head to glare at his mother, his expression violently shifting from confusion to cold, paralyzing realization.
