Chapter 9 - The Healing Process

Renata was still standing quietly in her simple white dress, looking completely overwhelmed by the explosive drama that had just occurred.

Mauricio ignored his expensive suit. He dropped to both knees right in front of the six-year-old girl, tears of absolute joy and profound relief finally falling freely from his dark eyes.

The terrifying, protective father completely melted away, leaving only a deeply loving, grateful dad.

"Daddy," Renata whispered softly, touching his cheek. "Are you sad?"

"No, sweetheart," Mauricio wept softly, gently pulling her into a fierce, desperate, unbreakable embrace. "I am so incredibly happy. Because you are going to get completely better now."

Renata hugged him back tightly. "No more special tea?"

"No more special tea," Mauricio promised, kissing her bald head. "You are never going to be sick again. I am going to protect you forever."

Maria, the brave housekeeper who had spoken the truth, stepped forward nervously.

"Mr. Mauricio," Maria said softly. "I can clean up the tree. You should rest."

Mauricio looked up at the hardworking woman. "You aren't cleaning anything today, Maria. In fact, you are never scrubbing another floor in this house."

Maria gasped, terrified she was being fired.

"I am promoting you to Estate Manager," Mauricio declared smoothly, his voice filled with absolute, unbreakable respect. "I am tripling your salary and giving you full medical benefits. You stood up to a monster to protect my family. You are part of this family now."
