Chapter 4 - The Twisted Motive
Carmen spun around, glaring at the housekeeper with pure, unadulterated venom.
"Shut your mouth, you filthy peasant!" Carmen screamed, pointing a shaking finger at Maria. "You have absolutely no proof! It's your word against mine, and I own this family!"
"You don't own anything anymore, Mother," Mauricio stated smoothly, stepping directly between his mother and the housekeeper.
Mauricio looked down at the second page of the attorney's letter. His tactical mind quickly pieced together the monstrous puzzle.
"You didn't just open this letter to hide the toxicology report, did you?" Mauricio asked coldly. "You opened it because the attorney attached the finalized guardianship transfer."
Carmen completely froze. Her face turned the color of wet chalk.
Mauricio read the legal clause aloud for the entire room to hear.
"Upon the discovery of foul play," Mauricio read, his voice vibrating with absolute, unstoppable justice, "all financial assets belonging to Renata will be immediately frozen and transferred out of the family's control, pending a federal investigation. You didn't just want Elena dead, Mother. You wanted her money."
The cinematic realization crashed over the entire room.
Carmen had murdered Elena to trigger the inheritance. She assumed Mauricio, drowning in his grief, would easily sign over control of Renata's trust fund to her to manage the real estate investments. But when the attorney discovered the poison and froze the accounts, Carmen intercepted the mail, desperately trying to destroy the evidence before Mauricio found out.
"I did it for our legacy!" Carmen shrieked hysterically, realizing she was completely, inescapably cornered. "Elena was going to donate the money to charity! She was going to leave us with nothing! I secured our future, Mauricio! I did this for you!"
Mauricio didn't scream. He didn't strike her. The cinematic realism of his restraint was infinitely more terrifying.
