Chapter 7 - The Federal Raid

Carmen scrambled desperately on the floor, tangled in the holiday lights, her burgundy dress torn and covered in pine needles.
"Mauricio, please!" Carmen wailed pathetically, all the arrogance completely drained from her voice. "I am your mother! You can't do this to me! Have mercy!"
"You showed Elena no mercy," Mauricio replied, his voice echoing coldly through the ruined dining room. "And you showed my daughter no mercy."
Mauricio didn't even need to dial the phone. He simply pressed a button to unlock it, revealing that he had been on an active, open call with the lead attorney the entire time.
The attorney hadn't just sent a courier. He had sent the authorities.
Suddenly, the heavy mahogany front doors of the luxury estate burst open with a deafening crash.
"FBI! Nobody move!"
A dozen heavily armed federal agents in tactical gear swarmed into the open-concept kitchen, their weapons drawn, their badges flashing in the warm holiday lighting.
Carmen let out a horrific, blood-curdling scream of pure despair as she realized the evidence against her was absolute and undeniable.
"Carmen Vance," the lead federal agent announced, marching straight up to the weeping woman tangled in the Christmas tree. "You are under arrest for the premeditated murder of Elena Vance, attempted murder of a minor, and massive federal wire fraud."
"No! Please!" Carmen shrieked like a banshee, kicking and thrashing wildly as two massive agents grabbed her by the arms, hauling her violently up from the floor.
The cold steel handcuffs clicked loudly around her wrists, snapping the arrogant murderer back into the horrific reality of her crimes.
"I am a respected businesswoman!" Carmen wailed, dragging her feet as the agents pulled her toward the front doors. "You can't do this! I want my lawyers!"

"Your lawyers just handed us the toxicology report," the agent replied coldly.
