Chapter 2 - The Fifty-Million-Dollar Debt

The heavy mahogany doors clicked shut, echoing like a gunshot through the massive penthouse.

Tess instantly let go of Roman’s hand. She physically staggered backward, her champagne silk gown swishing against the polished hardwood floor. She wrapped her arms around her own waist, hyperventilating as the absolute, crushing reality of her nightmare set in.

To understand the sheer, unhinged cruelty of Arthur’s betrayal, one had to understand his massive corporate failure.

Arthur was the CEO of a luxury real estate empire, but behind closed doors, he was a reckless, greedy gambler. Over the last five years, he had completely bankrupted the family company, secretly accumulating fifty million dollars in debt to Roman’s private equity firm. When Roman finally came to collect, Arthur panicked.

To avoid federal prison and complete financial ruin, Arthur had offered Roman the ultimate, sickening collateral: his only daughter.

Arthur had forced Tess to sign a binding marriage contract, transferring her entirely into Roman’s custody in exchange for erasing the fifty-million-dollar debt. He had threatened to throw Tess out on the street and destroy her late mother’s charitable foundation if she refused.

Tess had sacrificed her entire life, her freedom, and her future just to clean up her father's toxic mess.

Now, she was trapped in a glass cage with the most feared, ruthless billionaire in the city. She backed up until her shoulders hit the cold glass of the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring at the man in the black suit with wide, terrified eyes.
