Chapter 6 - The Billionaire's Motive

"You are a stranger to me, Tess," Roman said quietly, leaning forward. "But your mother wasn't."
Tess’s eyes widened in absolute shock.
"Fifteen years ago, before I had my own equity firm, I was a broke, desperate kid trying to get a small business loan," Roman explained, his deep voice thick with overwhelming respect. "Every single bank in this city laughed in my face. But your mother didn't. She saw my potential. She personally co-signed my first major loan and mentored me for three years. She is the only reason I am a billionaire today."
Tess covered her mouth with her hand, completely paralyzed by the revelation.
"When she got sick, she knew Arthur was a greedy, toxic monster," Roman continued, his eyes darkening with lethal fury. "She gave me a copy of her real will and asked me to watch over you. I promised her that if Arthur ever tried to hurt you, I would burn his entire life to the ground."
The pieces of the massive, chaotic puzzle violently slammed together in Tess’s mind.
Roman hadn't blackmailed Arthur into giving up his daughter. Roman had specifically, aggressively bought up all of Arthur's toxic debt from other banks just to force the arrogant man into a corner.
"The marriage contract wasn't about owning you, Tess," Roman stated flawlessly. "It was the only legal loophole to completely bypass Arthur's forged trust. By signing that paper today, you didn't become my property."
