Chapter 1 - The Broken Boy's Laugh

The quiet park near the edge of the city pond was painted in the brilliant, warm colors of late autumn. The late afternoon golden light filtered through the falling leaves, casting long, cinematic shadows across the grass.

Sitting on a wooden bench was Vincent. He was a fiercely muscular man in his forties, his dark suit struggling to contain his broad shoulders, heavy tattoos peeking out from his cuffs. Next to him sat his five-year-old son, Ames, wearing a small, pristine light blue suit.

Ames hadn't spoken, smiled, or laughed in exactly six months. Not since the horrific car accident that took his mother’s life. Vincent, a man who commanded fear in the criminal underworld, was entirely powerless to heal his broken son.

But suddenly, the impossible happened.

Standing in the grass a few feet away was a six-year-old girl. She was barefoot, her face smudged with dark dirt, wearing a heavily torn, faded yellow ruffled dress. She balanced playfully on one leg, crossing her eyes and making a ridiculously silly face directly at Ames.

Ames watched her closely. And then, the silence broke.

Ames suddenly burst into a bright, uncontrollable, beautiful laugh. He clapped his small hands together, his face lighting up with absolute joy.

Vincent froze. He stared at his son, his hardened eyes instantly filling with heavy, burning tears as he heard the beautiful sound he thought was lost forever.

Ames turned and gently tugged on his father's heavy coat.

"Can she stay with us?" Ames asked innocently.
