Chapter 3 - The Dark Blue Van

"Ames," Vincent said quietly, keeping his dark eyes locked entirely on the rusty blue van in the distance. "Go sit in the back of my car. Lock the doors. Do not open them for anyone but me."

Ames, sensing the sudden shift in his father’s terrifying demeanor, nodded quickly. He hopped off the bench and ran directly to Vincent’s massive, armored black SUV parked fifty feet away.

Vincent slowly stood up from the bench, adjusting the cuffs of his dark suit. He looked down at the trembling little girl.

"What is your name?" Vincent asked softly.

"Lily," she whispered, tears cutting clean tracks through the dirt on her face.

"Well, Lily," Vincent said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a heavy, polished black cell phone. "I am going to buy you the biggest sandwich in the city. But first, I need to have a conversation with the lady in that van."

As Vincent began walking across the golden, autumn grass, the side door of the rusty blue van violently slid open.

A woman in her thirties, wearing a cheap, flashy track suit and heavy makeup, stepped out. She held a thick leather belt folded in her hand.

"Hey! You little rat!" the woman shrieked, pointing the belt directly at Lily. "Get back here right now or I swear you aren't eating for two days!"
