Chapter 2 - The Trembling Hands

The warm, golden atmosphere of the park suddenly felt incredibly cold.
The little girl in the torn yellow dress dropped her foot back to the grass. She looked over her shoulder toward the thick line of trees at the edge of the park. Her realistic micro-expressions shifted from playful innocence into sheer, unadulterated, paralyzing fear.
Her tiny, dirty hands began to tremble violently.
She turned back to Vincent, her eyes wide with cinematic terror.
"Can I have my sandwich first?" she whispered, her voice cracking with desperate, agonizing panic. "Please. Before they come back."
Vincent’s blood turned to absolute ice. The grieving father completely vanished. The ruthless, highly observant apex predator fully awakened.
He didn't yell. The cinematic realism of his total restraint was terrifying. He looked at the little girl, noticing the dark, finger-shaped bruises wrapped tightly around her small, bare wrists. He noticed how her eyes darted frantically toward a rusty, dark blue van parked illegally near the edge of the woods.
"Who is coming back, sweetheart?" Vincent asked, his voice a low, soothing, yet incredibly lethal rumble.
"The lady who makes us work," the girl whimpered, backing away slightly. "I didn't mean to stop working. I just wanted to make him smile."
