Chapter 5 - The Lieutenant's Betrayal
"Where did she get this necklace, Elena?" Alessandro commanded smoothly, his voice dropping to a freezing, lethal whisper that completely paralyzed the maid.
Elena looked up, sheer terror violently widening her eyes when she saw him touching the sapphire.
"He... he gave it to her," Elena choked out, her entire body shaking.
To understand the absolute, crushing magnitude of the betrayal, one had to look at Alessandro’s inner circle. His right-hand man, a violent, greedy lieutenant named Marco, was the man who received that necklace. Marco had sworn absolute loyalty to the family. He claimed he was giving the necklace to his sick mother.
"Marco is the father?" Alessandro asked coldly, his mind frantically putting the horrific pieces together.
"Yes," Elena wept softly. "When I got pregnant, he forced me to work here as your maid. He said if I lived in your penthouse, I could copy the security codes and the offshore bank routing numbers for him."
