Chapter 2 - The Mafia Boss's Vow

Elena slowly turned around. She looked down at the powerful, towering billionaire currently kneeling in the dirt before her. Her hazel eyes welled with fresh tears. She was agonizingly torn between fleeing for her own physical safety and staying for the little boy she had come to love as her own.

Matteo, wearing a small navy blue coat and a tiny backpack, broke away from his father's grip. The six-year-old boy ran forward and threw his arms around Elena, clinging tightly to the soft fabric of her beige cardigan.

The little boy looked up at his father with wide, terrified brown eyes, his chin trembling.

"Don't go, Elena," Matteo whispered, burying his face into her stomach.

Adrien looked up at the young nanny. The cold, impenetrable mafia exterior that he used to rule the underworld was completely, utterly annihilated. He wasn't a crime boss in this moment. He was just a terrified, grieving father begging for the only person who had brought light and warmth back to his traumatized child's life.

"They need you," Adrien pleaded, his dark eyes searching hers frantically. "I need you."

Elena gripped the strap of her leather duffel bag even tighter, her knuckles aching. Her face twisted with the painful, suffocating internal conflict of her decision. She loved them. But she knew a dark, lethal secret that was going to get them all killed.

"It's too dangerous here, Adrien," Elena replied, her voice shaking with genuine terror.

The bodyguard in the background watched in absolute, stoic silence as the untouchable boss humbled himself before the young servant.

Adrien refused to let go of his son. He reached out, his large hand gently wrapping around Elena's trembling wrist. He looked dead into her eyes with absolute, raw vulnerability.
