Chapter 4 - The Stolen Diamonds

The tension in the driveway skyrocketed. The stoic bodyguard in the background subconsciously shifted his hand closer to his concealed weapon.

"A thief?" Adrien repeated, his dark eyebrows pulling together in deep confusion. He looked at Elena's tear-streaked, honest face. "Victoria, watch your mouth. Elena has never taken a dime from this family."

"Oh, really?" Victoria sneered, stepping aggressively closer to the nanny. "Then why is my private wall safe completely empty? The three-million-dollar heirloom diamond necklace your mother gave me is missing!"

Elena gasped, her eyes widening in sheer panic. "No! I swear, Adrien, I never touched her safe!"

"Liar!" Victoria shrieked, perfectly playing the role of the violated victim. "I saw her sneaking out of the master wing twenty minutes ago holding that exact brown duffel bag! She packed the diamonds, grabbed the boy to use as a human shield, and tried to slip out before I noticed!"

Adrien looked from his furious fiancée to the trembling nanny holding his son. The cinematic realism of the moment hung heavy in the warm morning air. Adrien was a man who dealt in lies, deception, and betrayal every single day. He knew how to read human micro-expressions.

He looked at Elena. She wasn't radiating the nervous, shifting energy of a thief. She was radiating the paralyzing, desperate terror of a hunted prey.

"Check her bag!" Victoria ordered the bodyguard standing near the SUV. "Marcus, grab that duffel bag and dump it on the pavement! I want my diamonds back right now!"
