Chapter 5 - The Search

"Stand down, Marcus," Adrien commanded. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried a lethal, chilling authority that stopped the two-hundred-pound bodyguard dead in his tracks.
Victoria’s fake outrage slipped for a fraction of a second, revealing a flash of genuine panic. "Adrien, what are you doing? She has my diamonds!"
"If there is something in her bag, I will be the one to find it," Adrien stated coldly.
He slowly walked over to Elena. He looked down at her small, trembling hands clutching the brown leather strap. He didn't rip the bag away from her. He gently, respectfully placed his hands over hers.
"Elena," Adrien whispered, his intense eyes searching hers. "I trust you. But I need you to open the bag. Let me prove her wrong."
Elena swallowed a heavy lump in her throat. She looked at Victoria, who was standing a few feet away with a smug, victorious smirk on her face. Victoria had meticulously planted the diamonds in Elena's room earlier that morning, fully expecting this exact scenario to play out.
Elena slowly unzipped the heavy brass zipper of the duffel bag.
Victoria crossed her arms, ready to demand the nanny's immediate arrest and execution by the syndicate.
Adrien reached his hand inside the main compartment. He felt past the neatly folded sweaters and a small toiletry bag. He reached the very bottom of the duffel bag.
His hand grasped something small, hard, and metallic. He pulled it out into the bright sunlight.
