Chapter 3 - The Elegant Monster

Before Elena could even process Adrien’s profound vow, the sharp, rapid clicking of designer heels echoed on the marble landing above them.
"What on earth is going on out here?!" a shrill, arrogant voice demanded.
Elena’s blood turned to absolute ice. She instinctively pulled Matteo closer to her beige cardigan, shielding the little boy with her own body.
Standing at the top of the grand stone steps was Victoria. She was Adrien’s beautiful, high-society fiancée, wearing a flawless emerald-green silk dress and dripping in expensive diamonds. To the outside world, she was a sophisticated socialite who was going to perfectly complete Adrien’s powerful image.
Behind closed doors, she was a calculating, cold-blooded monster.
Victoria marched down the stone steps, her face twisted in a mask of feigned shock and deep disgust. She looked at Adrien kneeling in the gravel, and her lip curled.
"Adrien, get up this instant!" Victoria scolded, her voice dripping with condescension. "You are embarrassing yourself in front of the security detail! Over a common maid? Have you completely lost your mind?"
Adrien slowly stood up to his full height. He didn't take his eyes off Elena. "She isn't a maid, Victoria. She's Matteo's caretaker. And she is leaving because she feels unsafe."
Victoria let out a sharp, theatrical gasp. She placed a manicured hand over her chest, forcing a look of absolute betrayal.
"Unsafe?" Victoria laughed bitterly. "Is that the pathetic lie she's telling you? Oh, Adrien, you are so incredibly blind when it comes to the help."
Victoria aggressively pointed a manicured finger directly at Elena’s brown leather duffel bag.
