Chapter 8 - The Cornered Snake

Victoria realized she was completely, inescapably trapped.

The sophisticated, untouchable socialite mask shattered, leaving a pathetic, sniveling coward in its place. She stumbled backward, tripping over the hem of her expensive emerald-green silk dress, and collapsed onto her knees in the rough gravel.

"Adrien, please!" Victoria shrieked hysterically, tears of pure, unadulterated terror ruining her makeup. "It was just business! The Barones threatened my family! They forced me to make the deal! I never would have actually let them hurt Matteo!"

"You ordered a hit on a six-year-old child," Adrien stated, his voice completely devoid of human empathy. He took a slow, deliberate step toward her. "My child."

"I was protecting our future!" Victoria sobbed, crawling toward him and desperately trying to grab his polished black shoes. "She's the enemy, Adrien! The nanny is poisoning your mind! You need me!"

Adrien looked down at her with eyes blacker than midnight.

He didn't pull a weapon. He didn't have to. The terrifying power he wielded meant he rarely had to dirty his own hands.

Adrien looked up at his massive bodyguard.

"Marcus," Adrien commanded, the finality in his voice echoing like a death knell. "Take her to the warehouse."
