Chapter 10 - The Painful Realization

Ethan walked out of the study, holding the signed divorce papers in his hand.

He stepped slowly into the magnificent marble foyer. The space was completely identical to how it looked three days ago. The chandelier still glowed. The plaster wall still bore the crack from his furious fist. But the silence in the mansion was no longer just quiet—it was absolutely deafening.

Miles away in Seattle, Claire was smiling, opening the doors to a new bakery she had bought in her father's honor, surrounded by loyal protectors and genuine peace.

But in Chicago, Ethan was entirely, devastatingly alone.

He stood exactly where he had taken the phone call. The terrifying mafia boss looked around the cavernous, empty room. The painful, crushing realization finally settled into his bones. He had ignored the only woman who truly loved him during her darkest, most agonizing moment, chasing a meaningless distraction.

And now, the woman he arrogantly believed would always sit faithfully in the mansion and wait for him had disappeared forever. There would be no reunion. There would be no second chance.

Ethan stared blankly into the silent, cold marble foyer, trapped forever in the prison of his own regret.

If you were Claire, would you have ever given Ethan a chance to explain himself, or was letting her father die alone an unforgivable sin?
