Chapter 9 - The Delivery

Two days later, the heavy brass knocker on the front door of the Chicago mansion echoed through the empty halls.
Michael accepted the overnight package from the courier and walked slowly into the grand study. He didn't say a word. He gently placed the thick manila envelope onto Ethan’s desk and quietly stepped out of the room, closing the mahogany doors behind him.
Ethan sat perfectly still. He looked exhausted, the sharp masculine features of his face drawn and pale.
He slowly reached out, his heavily tattooed hands trembling as he opened the envelope. He pulled out the divorce papers.
He flipped to the final page. There it was. Claire’s elegant, undeniable signature. She hadn't asked for a single dime of his millions. She hadn't asked for the cars, the jewelry, or the properties. She just wanted him completely, permanently erased from her life.
Ethan picked up his pen. He thought about mobilizing his men. He thought about starting a war. But the haunting realization hit him with the force of a freight train—even if he won a war, he could never win her back. He had destroyed her trust in the one moment she needed him most.
