Chapter 1 - The Price of Pride

The icy, relentless wind whipped fiercely through the snowy American city street, biting through the thickest winter coats. The warm, golden glow of a nearby cafe’s windows barely pierced the freezing darkness, casting long shadows across the snow-covered pavement.
A massive, armored black car pulled up to the curb, its heavy engine purring like a caged beast.
Dante stepped out into the freezing night. He was in his early thirties, a terrifyingly powerful underworld boss. He wore a tailored dark suit, his crisp white dress shirt casually open at the collar, revealing the edge of a dark, intricate mafia tattoo creeping up his neck. He was a man composed of cold, lethal authority, completely untouchable.
But as he walked toward the cafe, he stopped dead in his tracks.
Standing entirely alone in the freezing snow was a little girl. She was no older than six, with tangled blonde hair, shivering violently. She wore a thin, faded floral dress and a worn, oversized red cardigan that offered absolutely no protection against the blizzard.
Dante wasn't a man known for mercy, but the sight of the freezing child physically twisted his gut. He reached into his tailored suit jacket, pulled out a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills, and held the cash out to her.
Sophie looked at the money, her teeth chattering. But she didn't reach for it. Her small face hardened with a fierce, unbreakable dignity. She shook her head firmly.
"That's not fair, mister," Sophie stated, her tiny voice trembling but incredibly brave.
A tight close-up captured Dante’s reaction. His intense, intimidating features shifted into genuine confusion as he slowly knelt down in the freezing snow, completely ruining his expensive suit pants to match her eye level.
"Fair?" Dante asked softly, completely bewildered.
Sophie reached into the pocket of her red cardigan with her freezing, bare hands. She pulled out a heavy, antique silver pocket watch, holding it up to him. She refused to take his money for nothing.

"You have to take the watch," Sophie insisted, her chin raised with unyielding pride. "We don't do charity."
👉 Dante stared at the silver watch, entirely unaware that the object in the little girl's hand was about to completely shatter his reality.
