Chapter 4 - The Terrified Reunion

The inside of the abandoned basement was completely dark, smelling of damp concrete and freezing mold. The only light came from the ambient glow of the streetlamps filtering through a shattered windowpane.

Dante stepped inside, shielding Sophie from the jagged wood of the broken doorframe.

Lying on the freezing concrete floor, curled into a desperate, shivering ball, was Clara. She was wearing nothing but a thin, threadbare t-shirt and torn jeans, having sacrificed her only warm clothing to keep her daughter alive. Her lips were entirely blue, and she was dangerously close to severe hypothermia.

"Clara!" Dante choked out, dropping to his knees on the filthy floor.

He gently set Sophie down and reached out, his heavily tattooed hands frantically pulling Clara into his arms. He pulled her against his warm chest, desperately trying to transfer his body heat to her freezing frame.

Clara weakly opened her eyes. When her blurred vision finally focused on the man holding her, she didn't smile. She didn't sigh in relief.

She let out a horrific, breathless gasp of pure, unadulterated terror.

She violently scrambled backward, her hands scraping frantically against the freezing concrete as she desperately tried to put herself between Dante and Sophie.

"No! Please, Dante, no!" Clara wept hysterically, her entire body shaking with absolute, paralyzing fear. "Take my life! Do whatever you want to me, but please don't hurt her! She's innocent! Please don't kill my baby!"

Dante froze completely. His heart shattered into a million jagged pieces.
