Chapter 5 - The Underboss's Treason

The cinematic realism of the suffocating, tragic misunderstanding paralyzed the freezing basement.
"Clara, look at me," Dante begged, his voice breaking with profound, undeniable anguish. "I would never hurt you. I would never hurt our daughter. Why would you ever think I wanted to hurt you?"
Clara stopped scrambling backward, her back hitting the cold brick wall. She clutched Sophie tightly to her chest, her tear-filled eyes wide with sheer confusion.
"Silas," Clara gasped, her teeth chattering violently. "Silas came to my apartment seven years ago. He held a gun to my head. He told me you found out I was pregnant, and that you ordered him to execute me because a child would make you look weak."
Dante stopped breathing. The name of his most trusted underboss echoed in his mind like a physical gunshot.
"Silas took the severance money you supposedly left for me," Clara sobbed, burying her face in Sophie’s blonde hair. "He told me if I ever contacted you, he would kill my baby. I’ve been hiding in the slums for seven years. But today... Silas’s men found us. They dragged us out of our apartment and threw us into the snow. They said it was finally time to tie up loose ends."
The absolute, crushing magnitude of the betrayal hit Dante with the force of a freight train.
Silas hadn't just forged a breakup letter. He had stolen Clara’s money, forced her into hiding, and intentionally sent his men today to let the winter blizzard quietly murder Dante’s true family, permanently erasing the evidence of his treason.
