Chapter 5 - The First Clue

"I didn't die in the explosion, Vincent," Anna said, her voice dripping with venom. "Because I was never in the car."

Vincent’s heart hammered against his ribs. "The police found your jewelry in the wreckage."

"Because someone placed it there," Anna corrected him smoothly. She reached down and gently picked up her three-year-old son, holding him securely against her hip. "Three years ago, I walked down to the garage. But before I could get in my car, I heard a phone ringing. It was coming from a burner phone hidden inside a duffel bag near the tires."

Sophia took a frantic step backward, her eyes darting toward the ballroom exits.

"I answered the phone," Anna continued, her hazel eyes locking onto Vincent’s. "It was a man asking for the final payment. He said the bomb was rigged to the ignition, just like the boss ordered."

Vincent’s chest tightened. "My enemies..."

"Not your enemies, Vincent," Anna sneered, the heartbreak of her past finally boiling over. "The man on the phone asked for Sophia. And when I turned around, Sophia was standing in the doorway of the garage, holding the remote detonator."

The wealthy crowd gasped in absolute horror.

Vincent stopped breathing. He looked at the beautiful blonde woman standing next to him—the woman he had slept next to for the last two years, the woman who had wiped away his tears.

"Vincent, she's lying!" Sophia shrieked, tears of fake desperation flooding her eyes. "Why would I do that?! I loved you!"
