Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

The upscale Chicago medical corridor was a blinding sea of polished white floors, glowing monitors, and rolling carts. But despite the sterile environment, the air around the central nurses’ station was suffocatingly heavy with pure, unadulterated terror.

Fourteen witnesses—doctors, nurses, and hospital security—stood frozen in place, absolutely terrified to intervene.

Standing in the center of the corridor was Hannah Reed. She was a thirty-one-year-old maternity nurse, visibly eight months pregnant. Her soft brown hair was falling out of a messy, exhausted bun. She wore standard green scrubs with a stethoscope draped around her neck. Her pale, flushed cheek sported a fresh, ugly purple bruise—the result of being aggressively shoved against a doorframe by one of the suited men currently surrounding her.

Looming directly over her was Grant Wexler.

At forty-three, Grant was Chicago’s most powerful, untouchable crime boss. He wore a sharply tailored navy suit, a crisp white shirt, a dark tie, and a heavy luxury watch. He was a man accustomed to absolute obedience, his hand raised mid-gesture as if physically controlling the air in the room. His expression was intense, domineering, and emotionally ruthless.

"Move my mother into the larger suite," Grant demanded, his cold authority echoing off the tile walls.

Hannah’s whole body trembled, but she stood her ground, one hand protectively cradling her swollen belly. She was still drowning in grief after losing her firefighter husband months earlier, but her professional resolve was made of iron.

"She’s stable, sir," Hannah answered, fighting through the physical pain in her cheek. "My patient is not moving."

Grant stepped closer, invading her space, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous rumble. "Do you know who I am?"

Hannah looked up into his cold eyes, resolute and fearless. "I’m trying to keep someone alive."

Suddenly, Hannah’s body went completely rigid.

Her eyes widened in sheer, paralyzing horror. She violently gripped the edge of the metal medication cart as a sharp, agonizing cramp ripped through her abdomen. Warm fluid rushed down her leg, pooling onto the polished hospital floor.

Panic completely flooded her exhausted face. She gasped for air, clutching her stomach. "My baby—"
