Chapter 8 - The First Cry

Three agonizing hours passed.

Grant remained entirely motionless outside the operating room. His expensive suit was wrinkled, his perfectly styled hair was a mess. He clutched Hannah’s broken silver locket in his hand, his thumb rubbing over David's faded photograph.

Finally, the red light above the OR doors clicked off.

The lead surgeon walked out, pulling off his surgical mask. He looked exhausted, covered in sweat, but there was a faint smile on his face.

Grant pushed himself off the wall, his heart hammering against his ribs.

Before the surgeon could even speak, a sound pierced through the sterile silence of the hallway.

It was a cry. A loud, healthy, beautiful baby’s cry.

Grant let out a massive, shuddering breath, his shoulders dropping as the crushing weight of guilt slightly lifted.

"We stopped the bleeding," the surgeon said softly. "The baby girl is small, but her vitals are incredibly strong. Hannah is extremely weak, but she’s stable. She’s going to make a full recovery, Mr. Wexler. Your team arrived just in time."

"Can I see her?" Grant asked, his voice cracking with unfamiliar emotion.

The surgeon nodded. "She just woke up. But keep it brief. She's been through severe trauma."

Grant slowly pushed the door to the recovery room open.
