Chapter 2 - The Emergency Code
"Obstetrics! We need a gurney right now!" a young nurse screamed, completely shattering the paralyzed silence of the corridor.
The spell of fear broke. Medical staff swarmed forward, completely ignoring the mafia boss and his armed guards. A senior doctor slid to his knees on the slick floor, catching Hannah just as her legs gave out.
Grant’s terrifying, domineering confidence instantly cracked.
For the first time in his ruthless life, genuine fear washed over his sharp features. He stumbled backward, his polished leather shoes slipping slightly on the fluid. He was a man who commanded life and death in the criminal underworld, but staring at the pregnant woman screaming in agony, he realized his money and power meant absolutely nothing here.
Hannah fought desperately to stay conscious. Her hazel eyes were wild with sheer panic as she protectively wrapped both arms around her belly, terrified of losing the only piece of her late husband she had left.
"Get her to OR 3! Fetal heart rate is plummeting!" the doctor shouted.
Nurses hoisted Hannah onto a rolling gurney. As they moved her with frantic, violent speed, her green scrub top caught on the medication cart. The sudden jerk snapped the silver lanyard around her neck.
Her hospital ID badge and a silver locket clattered heavily onto the polished tile, skidding across the floor and stopping exactly at Grant’s feet.
The medical team sprinted down the hall, pushing Hannah through the swinging surgical doors, leaving behind a chaotic, bloody mess.
Grant stood completely frozen in the quiet aftermath. His breathing was shallow. He looked down at the floor.
