Chapter 9 - The Confession

Hannah weakly opened her hazel eyes. When she saw the tall, imposing man in the tailored suit walk into the room, genuine terror flashed across her face.
She instinctively curled her arms protectively around her newborn daughter, terrified that the mob boss had come to finish the argument.
"Please," Hannah croaked, her voice dry and broken. "Just leave us alone."
Grant didn't step closer. He completely ignored his pride, his power, and his ego. Right there, in the middle of the hospital room, Chicago's most feared crime boss dropped to his knees on the linoleum floor.
Hannah gasped in shock.
Grant slowly reached out and placed the broken silver locket gently onto the edge of her mattress.
"I didn't know," Grant whispered, tears of profound, crushing remorse filling his cold eyes. "I swear to God, Hannah, I didn't know."
Hannah stared at her husband's photo, then looked down at the kneeling billionaire in utter confusion. "Didn't know what?"
"Your husband, David... he was the firefighter who saved my mother's life in the warehouse fire," Grant confessed, his voice breaking. "He shielded her from the collapse. He traded his life for hers. I have spent seven months looking for you to repay the debt, and tonight... I nearly took everything you had left."
Hannah’s eyes welled with heavy, overwhelming tears. She finally understood. The man who had terrified her wasn't a monster anymore; he was a broken son standing in the shadow of her husband's sacrifice.

"Vince, the man who shoved you today, set that fire," Grant continued, looking up at her with fierce, protective intensity. "He is gone. He will never hurt anyone again."
