Chapter 5 - The Traitor's Voice

"Grant?" the elderly woman rasped, leaning heavily against her IV pole.

Grant’s terrifying fury faltered for a second. He rushed forward to support his mother. "Ma, what are you doing out of bed? You just got out of surgery."

His mother looked up at him, her frail hands trembling. Then, her eyes shifted past him and landed squarely on Vince, who was standing arrogantly by the nurses' station.

A look of pure, unadulterated terror washed over the old woman's face.

"It's him," she gasped, her grip tightening painfully on Grant’s forearm. "Grant... that's the man."

Grant frowned, deeply confused. "What man, Ma? That's Vince."

"The fire," his mother sobbed, tears spilling down her wrinkled cheeks. "Seven months ago. I was trapped under the beams. I heard voices before the firefighter broke the door down. The men who poured the gasoline... I recognized the voice, Grant! It was him! He told them to burn the building down!"

The entire corridor went dead silent.

Grant stopped breathing. The puzzle pieces violently slammed together in his brilliant, calculating mind.

Vince hadn't just shoved a nurse. Vince was the one who had ordered the arson to assassinate Grant's mother. Vince had orchestrated the hit to destabilize the syndicate so he could seize power.

And because of Vince’s treachery, David Reed had died. Because of Vince, Hannah was currently bleeding on a surgical table.
