Chapter 4 - The Debt of Blood

Grant stared at the tiny photograph, his chest heaving as he struggled to breathe.

That firefighter had given his life so Grant’s mother could live. For seven agonizing months, Grant had used all his wealth and underground resources trying to track down the hero's anonymous widow to repay the ultimate life debt.

And he had just found her.

He had just marched into a hospital, allowed his underboss to violently shove her against a wall, threatened her life, and caused her to go into premature, life-threatening labor.

A wave of absolute, sickening self-hatred washed over Grant.

"Boss, I said let's go," Vince repeated, clapping a heavy hand onto Grant’s shoulder. "That stupid pregnant bitch is lucky she passed out, or I would have taught her a real lesson about disrespecting this family."

The cinematic tension in the corridor reached a boiling point.

Grant slowly closed the silver locket, clutching it so tightly the metal cut into his palm. He stood up to his full, towering height. The fear and shock on his face evaporated, instantly replaced by a cold, demonic, and utterly terrifying wrath.

He slowly turned his head to look at Vince.

"You touched her," Grant whispered, his voice vibrating with a lethal, quiet intensity that made the surrounding bodyguards instinctively step backward.

Vince scoffed, completely misreading the situation. "Yeah, I shoved her. Nobody talks back to you, Grant. I handled it."

"You handled it," Grant repeated, his dark eyes turning pitch black.
