Chapter 5 - The Desperate Escape

Clara knew she couldn't stay in the mansion. If she waited for Rico to figure out the truth, Silvia would inject her with the lethal syringe, making it look like a tragic medical failure, and Leo would be left entirely at the mercy of a murderer.
She had to protect her son.
At 2:00 AM, Clara quietly scooped the sleeping Leo into her arms. She didn't pack anything. She slipped out of the master suite, her bare feet making absolutely no sound on the hardwood floors. Driven by fragmented memories and pure maternal instinct, she successfully bypassed two heavily armed patrols and found the service exit near the kitchens.
She pushed the heavy door open, stepping out into the freezing night air.
"Going somewhere, Isabella?"
Clara froze.
Stepping out of the shadows was Dante, the massive, bald bodyguard. He wasn't smiling. He was holding a heavy, suppressed pistol, pointing it directly at her chest.
Silvia stepped out from behind him, wrapping her expensive coat around her shoulders.
"You really are incredibly predictable," Silvia mocked, crossing her arms. "I knew you would try to run. Now Dante can shoot you in the back and tell Rico you were a spy trying to kidnap his son."
"Please," Clara wept, shielding Leo with her own body. "Let him go! Take me, but don't hurt my baby!"
"You're both loose ends," Silvia replied, completely devoid of human empathy. She looked at the towering bodyguard. "Do it, Dante. Kill them both."
