Chapter 8 - The Memories Return

"You really think I am that stupid, Silvia?" Rico asked, his voice a low, lethal rumble that made the freezing air feel even colder.
Rico reached into his pocket with his free hand and pulled out his cell phone. He pressed play.
The crystal-clear, heavily encrypted audio recording of a phone call echoed through the courtyard.
"The brakes are cut. Make sure the decoy body is in the driver's seat before you torch the car. Rico can never know she survived."
It was Silvia’s exact voice, recorded six months ago.
Silvia’s jaw dropped. She realized she was completely, inescapably trapped. "Rico, please! I did it for us! She was weak! I am the queen you need to run this empire!"
Hearing the audio of the crash, smelling the cold air, and seeing Rico standing fiercely in front of her to protect their son... it was the final, overwhelming trigger.
Clara gasped, dropping to her knees in the snow. A massive, agonizing flood of memories violently crashed back into her brain. She remembered her wedding day. She remembered giving birth to Leo. She remembered every single moment of her beautiful life with Rico.
"Rico..." Clara wept, tears of pure, absolute recognition falling down her cheeks. "It's me. It's really me."
Rico’s cold, ruthless exterior completely shattered. He looked at his wife, seeing the light of her true soul finally return to her eyes. The heavy, agonizing weight of six months of grief instantly evaporated.
"I know, mia cara," Rico whispered softly, a genuine tear falling from his eye. "I've got you."
